What Is Moonshot Press?
An introduction, for the relaunch
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
These words launched a nation 250 years ago. For too many Americans, they remain unfulfilled.
We are living inside that anniversary now — not approaching it, but in the middle of it, with the harder work stretching across the years ahead. The distance between our founding promise and our lived reality has rarely felt so stark. Polarization fractures communities. Barriers to opportunity stay entrenched. Millions of people feel powerless to shape the systems that govern their lives. And artificial intelligence is reshaping work and society faster than our institutions can adapt.
Moonshot Press is driven by a simple conviction: the promise of the Declaration of Independence isn’t history — it’s our unfinished work.
A free press has always been the instrument through which a self-governing people holds that promise to account. The republic the founders designed cannot function without citizens who are genuinely informed — and it cannot endure without citizens who are genuinely equipped to act. That’s the role we take up.
What Moonshot Press actually is
Plainly: Moonshot Press is an independent, non-partisan, subscriber-supported media platform. We answer to our readers and to the principles of our shared social contract — not to advertisers, not to algorithms, not to any party. We’re part newsroom, part civic laboratory. We don’t just report on democracy’s failures — we build the infrastructure to address them. Our journalism doesn’t stop at informing you. It’s built to equip you. That’s the whole difference in one sentence: journalism that only covers democracy isn’t enough anymore.
Democracy needs journalism that helps build it.
Three pillars, one promise
We translate the Declaration’s principles into three concrete commitments:
DEMOCRACY — making “created equal” real. When participation is limited to voting once every few years, equality stays theoretical. We give you tools to understand and influence the systems shaping your life.
OPPORTUNITY — making sure “life” means flourishing, not mere existence. We focus on the physical, emotional, and social infrastructure that lets human potential actually develop.
CITIZENSHIP — making “liberty” active, not passive. We provide the roadmaps and the community to turn civic frustration into civic power.
Why AI matters here — and why we’re careful with it
Moonshot Press is only possible at this scale because of artificial intelligence. AI helps us research, synthesize, and sharpen what we publish, working at a scope that would otherwise require a much larger staff.
But we hold that to one strict, standing rule: AI recommends, humans decide. Always. AI never makes the final call on what gets published, how a story gets framed, or what we stand for. Whenever AI meaningfully shapes something we publish, we say so — not in fine print, but plainly, because we think that transparency is itself a civic argument: that AI, governed openly and pointed at human flourishing, can strengthen democracy instead of eroding it. That governance isn’t a vague promise. It’s written down.
The Moonshot Press Constitution is our public commitment to how we operate — including exactly how and where AI touches our work. We publish it so you can read it, question it, and hold us to it. A newsroom that asks you to trust it should be willing to show you its rules.

We start with the First 1,000 Days of life, because democratic capacity is built — or broken — long before anyone casts a vote.
Community: Building Stronger Communities Through Collective Action — Strong communities are the backbone of a healthy democracy. We examine the social, economic, environmental, and political conditions that let communities thrive, with our hyperlocal initiative in Montgomery County, PA as living proof of concept.Health:
Enhancing Health and Wellbeing — Health is foundational to both individual and democratic flourishing. We advocate for a salutogenic model — shifting focus from treating illness to actively creating health — spanning the First 1,000 Days, whole-person care, and the responsible use of AI in health.
Technology: Artificial Intelligence in the Public Sphere — AI is reshaping our world. We explore how it can both challenge and strengthen democratic processes, and push for the thoughtful, equitable dialogue that citizens, policymakers, and technologists owe each other.
Media: Exploring the Media’s Role in Democracy — Media is central to an informed public. We try to model what credible, responsible journalism looks like in the age of AI and misinformation — and hold ourselves to that standard first.
Moonshot Press and Project 2026
Moonshot Press is the ecosystem: the newsroom, the Citizen Toolbox, the Constitution that governs how we work, and everything you’ve read on this page.
Project 2026 is our flagship initiative within that ecosystem — the year-long, multi-year body of civic work, anchored to America’s 250th anniversary but not confined to it, that Moonshot Press has made the organizing focus of its coverage and its work. It operates under the same rules as everything else here: the same Constitution, the same “AI recommends, humans decide” standard, the same Citizen Toolbox. It’s not a separate outlet or a separate project — it’s what Moonshot Press is currently building, organized around four questions:
